Wisconsin Dells

What a place! Beautiful scenery. My sister had told me how pretty it is and that we would like it there. She was ever so right.

Our campground, Christmas Mountain, a Blue-Green property (Hi, Liz), was very nice. At first we didn't think we had gotten a very good site, but we quickly found that we had indeed a nice site.

Since Momma Traveler was over going on boat rides for a while, TM and I took off to town to see the upper and lower dells. Right away we noticed a familiarity. As the 1st visitor we talked to said, it is just like Gatlinburg, TN. Pretty much a tourist town; but, luckily, was not as crowded at Gatlinburg.

The boat rides were just great. We went 1st to the lower dells, which happens to be pretty unspoiled. There are a couple of resorts and a few houses, but basically they are fairly well hidden. We saw the area of the flooding that happened in June and emptied Lake Delton. Basically the lake could not hold all the water, so the water took (to) the road. Yep, wiped out the road and 4 houses to spill over into the Wisconsin River. The are working to get repairs done, but it will never be the same. When you look at the picture try to picture the water up almost that high in the river too.





One of the items we were supposed to see was a milk bottle with a cow one it. Is it here?

Afterwards we crossed the road and went up the street to the ride for the Upper Dells. The area around there is more developed, as the town is basically up there, above the dam. This ride included a stop at the Witches Gulch; which is basically an inlet. They have built a boardwalk from the river back into the natural split in the rock and there are a number of places to see what the water has done over the years in carving out the rock. Oh, yeah, guess what - there is a gift shop and food pavilion. (coffee - $2.50 a cup - don't think so!). Also, some old graffiti over grown with green algae.

Then we moved on to Stand Rock and the famous jumping dogs. There is a cliff with a split where another tall rock stands alone. They have german shephard dogs who jump from one to the other. (Blow up the bottom picture to see the dog.)It was kind of cute and the dogs were beautiful. Another boardwalk to see the scenery and rocks, leading to - guess. Another gift shop and food pavilion! And a formation called "Anvil Rock,"


We then headed back toward the landing. However we went past the landing to go under the rail road bridge and very close to the dam. It was all really beautiful.

We had saved our money and appetites to go to Cheesecake Heaven. Yum, really good. Then we took a look at the still working Rail Road station.
