Chateau do Mores (The hunting cabin)

Thursday came with rain. Around noon it stopped raining, still overcast, but no rain. We went to the Chateau de Mores.
Marquis de Mores came to North Dakota in the 1883 to become the "world's wealthiest financier". He was going to do this with cattle. First though, he had to build a "hunting cabin" for the family and guests. Only 26 rooms – after all, there were servants to be considered.

He founded the town of Medora, named after his wife, bought cattle and built a meat processing plant. The railroad had already come to this area, so he just needed a spur added to the plant. No problem. He made it for 3 years and only lost about $1,ooo,ooo. (Lucky he was a wealthy man with a wealthy wife). The "hunting cabin" was refered to as a chateau by the locals, hence the name. His son gave the chateau to the state of ND in 1927. It has been restored with many of the original furnishings, original water color paintings by the Marquise, and replacated drapes and wallpaper. It is really a neat place because of the number of items that belonged to the family. De Mores was a neighbor of Theodore Roosevelt, he was arrested for murder, tried aand aquited, lost huge sums of money all over the world and was murdered in North Africa. Medora died in France of injuries incurred while serving as a nurse during WW I.

We barely got back home before there was more rain and it began to get pretty chilly. So we stayed home the rest of the day.
