To Traveling Man. His birthday was Sunday. He is now one year closer to collecting that magnificent Sears retirement check, woohoo.
It was a nice day. We went to services and met some nice, nice people (esp. the Vol fans). The class we attended was unusual. It is taught by 2 lawyers and they are making a case for who killed Jesus. It centers on one person at a time, ie, Pilot, Judas, etc. and why they acted or reacted the way they did and did that make them directly responsible. Two lawyers, go figure.
The service was very different from where we have been attending, but we liked it. The preacher gave a good lesson. Except he kept refering to himself in the 3rd person which made TM sit up and take notice, since the preacher's name is Don.
After services, lunch was served for all visitors and pretty much anyone else. Talk about a lot of food - your plate was full before you got 1/3 of the way down the table. It was all delicious. The people who sat at our table were fun.
The building is very large. One man was telling us that the church had the property and were raising funds to build. Another church had this building nearly finished when they went bankrupt. They sold the building to this church. Men from the church went and dismantled the building, labeling everything, moved it and reconstructed it. Pretty interesting way to get a building and they only paid about 1/4 of the actual value.
They have the chairs in the auditorium like Laurel is looking at. It seems to be working very well and they are more comfortable than those wooden pews.
Today, Monday, was a stay at home day. It has been very cool and damp, sort of like a late fall day. Tomorrow or Wednesday, depending on the weather, we want to go see the Hank Williams Museum. And a few other things.
God Bless.

Prattville
No, I haven't yet found out how it got it's name, but I am sure it has to do with someone named Pratt.
After a (thankfully) uneventful drive, we arrived on Friday in plenty of time to set up before the rain started. We were so proud - and then it was only light rain for about 5 minutes.
We are actually at Gunter Hill Campground, a Corps of Engineers campground, and about 15 or so minutes from Prattville. Saturday, after looking on the net for a church, we drove to Prattville. We found the church building and it is really big. On the grounds is also the Christian school.
We went to Wal-Mart (what else?) for a few groceries and things. Then we went looking for a headlight for the Mazda. The 1st parts place was a bust since the clerk couldn't even read the book. But Auto Zone came thru for us. Knowing that we would be driving the Mazda well after dark, it was a relief to find the right bulb.
Saturday night we went to Evelyn's and then to her friends house. Actually Shannon is her supervisor, but they have become good friends. Shannon's mom has been teaching Evelyn to crochet. We all went to dinner at Olive Garden. There was Shannon, her husband Len, her mother, Carol, and Evelyn, TM and me. We had a really fun time. They are fun people. After that we went to the Shakespeare Theater for a play. It was not a Shakespeare play, that is just the name of the theater. The play was delightful. "Above the Tavern" is set in the 1950's and deals with a 12-yr-old boy, his family, and his questions about religion. It was hysterically funny and the actors were all very good. I recommend it.
When we came out, it was pouring rain. Now, which one of us had the umbrella? Oh right, none of us! Len, bless him, went and got the car to pick us up at the door. When we got back to their house, we went inside for a moment to meet their 10 dogs. That is not a misprint, I did mean ten. Good thing they are small and caged. But what a ruckus they raised.
Then the 3 of us piled into Evelyn's car to go back to her house. Since it was still raining like crazy, we didn't hang around her place, but got into our car and left. As it was, it was nearly 12:00 when we got home.

Happy Birthday
Well, our little girl had a birthday yesterday. I won't tell you her age because that might give mine away. She was happy and had a great day - except for staying a little late at work. We called thinking she would be home and maybe walking the dog. We settled for singing to her voice mail. Nice thing about that is that she doesn't have to listen to all of it; but she is a trooper and thanked us. Since dates sort of sneak up on me nowadays, her card was a little late.
Wednesday was pretty laid back. We went to Bible class that night. The teacher tried mightily to get finished with Leviticus, but he'll be 1 or 2 more weeks finishing that. This has been a nice, friendly congregation.
Thursday has been "get ready to leave" day. Not much going on, just TD starting with his anxiety attack.

Back to Pensacola
After a nice weekend, we realized we needed to go to Camping World. Camping World is in Gulf Breeze, FL. On looking at the map, we realized we would be 30 minutes or less from Bill & Jean & Wanda. Since we weren't real sure on our timing, etc., we didn't call the day before. So we got to Camping World about 10:30, which wasn't bad at all. I called from there to check and see if anyone was home and wanted visitors. Wanda was out, but Bill & Jean said come on over. It actually took us about 30 minutes to spend $300 and walk traveling dog.
We headed over to Pensacola thinking we were pretty sure of the route. Pretty sure isn't really good enough, since we got lost. However, we only missed one turn and still were able to find Navy Blvd. and not run too late getting there. Bill and Jean were on the porch ready to go to breakfast - hey, they have been retired long enough to have that sleeping in thing down pat. After we got TD settled we left for IHOP (yummy), only to find it closed due to a plumbing problem :(. None of us knows our way around there, but we could find Ruby Tuesday. It wasn't exactly breakfast food, but the hamburger was delicious. We had a great visit and hated to leave when we did, but wanted to get home before dark. We did not get lost going out!
Missed you Wanda.

Pensacola
Thursday, we made the drive to Pensacola, which is about 80 miles. We went there to visit with our Uncle Bill and Aunt Jean. They are staying with their daughter-in-law's mother, Wanda. What a great time we had.
Wanda had a beautiful home that has been completely rebuilt since the hurricanes a few years ago. She lives on a bayou, but is across the street from it. Still the water got into her home.
She was thrilled to let Traveling Dog into her house She has a bird, but TM completely ignored it. Wonder if he would have ignored it if it had been fying loose? We didn't try that.
We all went to a nice lunch at Ruby Tuesday and then spent the afternoon just chatting. All these people have such experiences to tell. We asked Bill a number of questions about his childhood and family history. He and Daddy were mischevious little boys. It was somewhat disappointing to find that he hardly knew the Emerson family, as that is what I am researching. Guess I will look more into the Wyse family (maternal). It was great fun listening to his memories of growing up in Maury City. Jean had much to add about the exploits of the adult family. She is from Cinncinati and didn't grow up with the family. That's ok if she is a Yank, we love her.
We had intended to leave there early afternoon, but somehow the day skipped a few hours and we didn't get out until nearly 6:00. I am not sure TD wanted to leave, he was getting so much attention.
On the way home, we stopped near DeFuniak Springs at Mom and Dad's Italian Restaurant. Nice place and the food was good - also plentiful.
Friday was a down day. Good thing we have TD, he keeps us from completely vegging. Saturday we made an exciting(?) trip to Walmart. We stopped at Radio Shack on the way back home, but not for long, as they had closed at no0n.

Historic Defuniak Springs
According to their sign, DeFuniak Springs has 250 buildings on the national register. Many of them, of course are downtown. TM, TD and I headed down there on Tuesday to do the walking tour. The town is named after a railroad man and was established circa 1880. The lake in the center of town is spring fed and has no outlet. It is unusual in that plus the fact that it is naturally round. Consequently the road around the lake is called Circle Drive. There are 39 buildings on the walking tour, most of which are homes. The homes are lived in and are not open for tours. I think someone said they do have tour at Christmas time, when all the homes are decorated for the season.
It took us a couple of hours to make the circuit since we were in no hurry and wanted to get pictures. The day was overcast and comfortable.
As we came on the library, I told Don we were home. Let me explain. When we lived in Rantoul, IL in the late 60's, early 70's, our house on base was 3 Circle Drive. Now guess the address of the DeFuniak Springs library. The library was built in 1886. It is the only building in the state that was built as and has been in continuous use as a library. That is 122 years. The building has been added on to in the back, but they did not add wings to detract from the original facade. It is a neat place.
The Presbytarian Church was built before 1900 and is still in use. However, it does have extensive damage to most of the columns and caps. I don't know if that is just time, or if the damage was caused during one of the hurricanes a couple of years agl.
The train station houses the historical society museum, but we didn't have time to go there. Hopefully we will find time before leaving this area.
Traveling dog really liked the walk. He is always excited when he gets to be with us.
God Bless

delightful weekend
On Saturday, TM and I went grocery shopping (see how exciting our life is). We drove into the historic district of DeFuniak Springs and located the church building. We also visited the old railroad depot. Later in the day our friends, Doug and Glo arrived. We met them at their hotel and had dinner with them; then went back to their hotel room and chatted for about an hour. They were pretty tired because of changing time zones and being stuck in traffic for about 2 hours. We were able to give them directions to the church building.
We all met at the building on Sunday morning. Bible class starts at 9:00, which is a little early, but we made it there. Lots of nice people at this congregation, many of them from Tennessee. We had lunch and then went to downtown so they could see the station and the historic buildings. Nothing in DeFuniak Springs downtown is open on Sunday, so we told Doug and Glo they needed to stay another day. Abouth 3:00 they went back to the hotel and we went home. Everybody needed a little nap.
Evening services were at 6:00 and this week was a singing. There was also finger foods and fellowship afterwards (being guests we got to go first).
Doug and Glo did decide to stay another day, so we made plans to meet in downtown around 10:00am. Monday was a beautiful day with just enough breeze to keep cool. We went into The Big Store, which is basically a gift and antique store. The owners were very interesting to talk to as they knew much about the history of the town. Next we went to The Little Big Store. What a fun place. It is just cram full of old and new things. The owner is from Crossville, TN and we had a long conversation.
Then we went over to the library, where the librarian was very helpful. They have several notebooks filled with historical documents of Dufuniak Springs. She also gave us a walking tour guide. Unfortuneately, there wasn't enough time to do the tour. We went to lunch at Murray's Cafe. Since it was St. Pat's day, they were having Shepherd's pie and everyone ordered that. Except me. I couldn't pass up the chance to have a hamburger with fried green tomatoes on it. Very good.
Doug and Glo left after lunch in order to get to Auburn before too late in the day.
It was great fun and I could write on and on, but you might get tired of reading.
God Bless.

A bit more
Wednesday we went to Fort Fanning Park. What a beautiful, restful place with a nice walking, biking, rollerblading trail. There is nothing left of the fort, as it was a wooden fort during the second Seminole war, 1834 - 1838. It was only recently finished. I hope someday they will erect signs with more information.
There is a place along the highway the advertises "We buy and sell most anything" so naturally, TM had to go inside. Mostly is is building stuff, tile, flooring, tools, nails, all that sort of thing; but we had fun looking.
Wednesday night was Bible class. Again the people were so very nice, plus having a good class.
Thursday morning we took a walk out to the river via the boardwalk. The water has really gone down since our first trip out there. TD seems to have gotten used to the boardwalk. Plus there were people there that just made over him, petted him, talked sweet to him. Being a brave little doggie, he "put up with it".
Thursday afternoon we went and looked at another campground, which proved to be very nice. We had some other errands planned, but realized we had forgotten about the ice cream social! How did that happen? We raced back and got there just as they started dishing up ice cream - whew! There are some things we don't mind missing, but ice cream social is not one of them. Nice visit with lots of good folks.
Friday morning it was raining. I sure hope raining on the day we leave doesn't get to be a habit. This was a slow rain, so not too bad. As I was trying to finish up in the trailer so the slides could go in, TD was "dogging" my steps. I mean, if my foot moved, all four of his did. (worse than a kid). I finally relented and put him in the car so I could finish without killing one of us. When I opened the trailer door, he was at that car like a shot, could hardly wait for me to open the car door.
The trip went fine as we encountered only a little rain, but no storms. The was, however, a lot of wind, so we had to stop and reposition the kayaks to keep them from bouncing.
Sunset King is a nice campground. It is set up differently that others we have been in and we like the set-up. (Ice cream social is Monday).
So here we are Saturday, ready to do a little grocery shopping. And looking forward to seeing our friends Doug and Glo this afternoon.
God Bless.

What's in a name?
Mantee Springs State Park. What a beautiful place. The water was so clear that we could see all the mantees! Yes, we spotted at least 12 of them. When the water is too cold in the gulf for the manatee, they swim up the Suwanee to this springs which is 72 degrees year round. They usually hang around there until the water warms up other places. Because of the recent rains, the spring itself was not impressive, but it does put out thousands of gallons of water per day.
Mantees don't move around a lot, so watching them is sort of like watching paint dry, but we did just look at them. They would stick their noses up to get air every so often and some of them (the younger ones) did move around slowly. Traveling Dog didn't get to see them, because he isn't allowed that close to the spring. It was a (relatively) cool day, so he didn't mind staying in the car.
From there we went to Fanning Springs. I don't know if the Manatees make it up there or not. Again, due to the recent rains the spring was flooded. This water, however, was very black, I think because that spring does not put out as much water. We took the boardwalk out to the river and had some interesting sights along the way. TM will post pics (I hope).
Today, we went almost to Gainesville to the bank. Closest Suntrust we could find. That's ok, it was a good drive. We stopped in Trenton, Fl to see the old train station. We also went into the Suwanee Quilt Shop to their cafe. MMM, wonderful desserts. Actually the salad was good also. We had a nice, leisurely lunch.
While at the quilt shop, I picked up an advertisment for Otter Springs RV Campground. So, we wandered back to find it. Even in the Mazda, we couldn't do but about 20 on the rutted county road leading to the campground; just think about pulling our rig back in there. It is a really nice campground though and one to think about.
After we got back, TM climbed up on the roof still looking for the leak. He is hoping he found it. The "boot" around the television cable was not sealed (I guess it had come loose), so he sealed and taped it. Sure am hoping that is the fix.
God Bless and enjoy the week,

Rain, rain, go away
We left Bee's campground around 9:30am on Friday. The day was overcast with sun peeking thru occasionally. About an hour out, it started to rain - and rain - and rain! Just about the time we would think about pulling off, it would slacken up and we would soldier on. Remember, we were not on interstate, or toll road, just plain old US27. Which, by the way, is in need of some repair work.
We got here to Suwanee River Hideaway in Old Town, FL about 2pm; which wasn't bad time considering the weather. Yes it was still raining. Lucky for us it slacked off quite a bit while we set up. When the rain came back, it included thunder. Now Traveling Dog is just not too fond of thunder, and, as you know, has an anxiety attack when we move anyway. He decided he just wasn't going to get out of the car. When I tried to pull him, he slipped his collar. So, I told TM, you get him or let him stay, I don't care. TM (Mr. Macho) couldn't let TD have the upper hand, so out he went. He got the collar back on, but then had to twist it and pull to get TD out of that car. Our sweet doggie was not happy even though we were in here with him, until that thunder stopped.
Old Town is old and small. I already knew they only had one stop light. They only have one grocery store and one Dollar General - but, naturally 2 gas stations. Yep they both charge the same for their gas.
Saturday, we kind of lazed around. There is a boardwalk out to the Suwanee River and we took a walk out there. You can fish or launch a boat. They don't recommend swimming because of the gators, but if you want to feed gators that is your choice. The swamp is really up because of the rain. The butterweeds are pretty.
Sunday, we went to services here in Old Town. The Church of Christ here has about 60 members, but many were out sick. Seems to be something going around here (like most places during this flu season). The people are very friendly and welcoming. One couple lives on the same road as the campground. They described their place and told us to stop in anytime. We are already looking forward to Wednesday night class.
This is a nice secluded campground with really big lots. We are glad we picked this one.

Yike
Where did the week go? I guess I have been busy.
Friday afternoon we went over to Merritt Island and had a great visit with the kids. Mike & Sheila only worked a half day, so we had the whole afternoon. Sheila and I ran errands and got a chance to talk a lot. Mike's small business making tack boxes is going good. He has about 4 orders, so he worked on those. Mary got home in time for supper so we even got to see her a little bit.
Sunday, of course, was church services. After the evening services they had the monthly "finger foods" where they celebrate all anniversaries and birthdays for the month. Don got to be near the front of the line because of his birthday being in March. Good fun, good food, good fellowship.
Monday was lunch with Mellan & Richard and beading class. Then on Tuesday, Mellan and I did a little shopping (not enough of course). We both found blouses and I got a purse, so not too bad. They were going to come out to the restaurant at the campground for Tuesday night chicken, but Richard was not feeling up to it.
Today (Wednesday) was scrapbooking. However, I didn't do any scrapbooking - anyway they were making cards. I did beading and got a couple of projects done. After lunch at Gator's Dockside Grill (no dock nearby, what's with that?), Don and Richard headed up to Leesburg to pick up Mellan's car that had just gotten a new transmission - goodby tax refund! So Mellan, Rita (good friend, practically family), and I tossed a mental coin about going beading or shopping. I really think it was rigged, because somebody said shopping before my mental coin even got in the air. So we headed out to Joann's Fabrics - not that anybody bought fabric. They got quite a bit of scrapbooking stuff and I picked up a couple of other things.
Tonight was our last night at Wildwood Church until we return in November (God willing). These are just the greatest people. Lots of hugs and "you are leaving too soon"'s. We will miss them all, but it is really something to look forward to when we come back. Also if we make it to the Diana Singing in Sept. we should see several of them there.
We are looking forward to our adventures as we head Northward. However, I told TM that this has been such a busy week, we probably need a bout a week to rest.
God Bless you all.
