Made it to Big Bay

Lighthouse. It is now a bed & breakfast and they give tours on Wed and Sun. Needless to say we did not get a tour. But the grounds are beautiful. And the lake crashing into the rocks is a nice sound. It you want solitude this is the place to be. W-a-y off the beaten path for sure. Again the grounds are lovely as is the drive up there. We even saw a couple of deer along the way.
On the way there we stopped and went to the top of Sugarloaf "mountain". it is a large bald rock towering at the top of a cliff. When you (finally) get to the top, the view is amazing. Of course, we did have a fantastic day for it. 70 degrees, light wind, clear skies. It doesn't really sound like it, but it is quite a hike. If the county had not put in stairs, I probably could not have done it. As one lady said, I am not as sure-footed and agile as I used to be. In fact, I can't remember that I even used to be! We even wore out poor TD. He was dragging and super glad to see that water bowl when we got back to the truck. I was super glad to see my cold tea!
During the day we met a couple from Knoxville - Rocky hill, Wallace Rd. area, a couple that spent lots of time in the Smokies and a couple of men from Nashville. All trying to get out of the heat wave.
After the climb and then driving on up to Big Bay, we were ready to eat, but had seen no restaurants. Thinking about stopping at the general store and seeing if we could pick up sandwiches. However, TM missed a turn when we left the lighthouse and we made a circle back to 550. Well, there was a very nice restaurant! Went in and had a good meal.
Got home around 4 and all 3 of us collapsed.
Good night and God Bless

Still U.P. here

About that ride across 510 - the really unusual thing (to us) is that we did not see any wildlife. Not so much as a squirrel. Maybe if TD had been with us he would have spotted one. Still the scenery is wonderful.
We went into Musining, about 35 miles and saw Musining Falls. Very pretty waterfall and a paved trail leading to it. There were stairs to take to the top of the fall. There used to be a trail behind the fall, but due to rock fall it has been closed. TD got to go with us and he enjoyed it a lot. Especially when kids stopped to pet him.
After that we went to Miners Castle. It is an overlook where you can see part of Pictured Rocks that are shaped like castle turrets. TD was with us on that one too. Couple of dogs he really wanted to play with, but just wasn't going to happen. Too many people about. Didn't get many pics there due to the fog on the lake.
We stopped at the Bear Trap for lunch (around 3). TM had a pasty (pass-ty) and said it was really good. I had a Wisconsin burger with cheese. What is a Wisconsin burger? It is a bratwurst patty with cheese and onions on a bun. Very good. TM helped eat the french fries.
A group of motor cyclists came in just before we left. Several of them sat on the porch to rest and of course TM had to talk with them. And he had to get TD out of the truck. Even more attention for the pup!
We had thought to back to Miners Beach, but stopping for lunch made us realize we were ready to head home. So we did.
Last Wed was a hot day, around 90. The church building does not have air conditioning so we met in the basement. Much cooler and we had fans going.
Sunday was the congregational picnic. By the time we ran home to let TD out and then got back to the park, they were just sitting down to eat. Good timing, didn't have to do any of the work. The food was fine and it was a good opportunity to get to know some of the people better. Stayed cloudy and a little chilly until time to leave and then the sun came out. Oh, it was interesting how many people stopped to listen and enjoy our singing after lunch.
That's about it. God Bless

U.P.here 2

What a ride! Started out for Big Bay Lighthouse and decided to see some waterfalls along the way. We got a map from the welcome center. Understand that these waterfalls are not marked - no signs of any kind. The map gives you (approximate) directions. So we missed the 1st one. Probably thought the road was a driveway. We got to County Rd 510, a dirt road well packed, no problem. Found the stop for the 1st waterfall on that road because there were several cars there. In fact there was a group of young people camping. We started the 7/10 of a mile hike. The trail split and again no signs to tell you which way, so we went left. Not right, there was still a trail; but it was narrow. We were right on the river (Yellow Dog River) though. As we approached the falls, we saw a lady just sitting on the side of the trail. Seems she had slipped and twisted her knee, but her husband was still fishing. He is a doctor and could tell it wasn't broken. After TM went down to the falls - I was leery of the rocks and did not go - the doctor came with him. We said we would stay with them as they hiked out, but he decided to fish some more so we went on. They were from Mobile AL. As I said I did not see the actual falls, but the cascade was really pretty so I don't think I missed too much.
Back on the scooter looking for Little Falls. Found the parking area even though there was no one else there. The falls were only about 200 feet, which is a good thing because I am not used to hiking. The cascade and falls were so pretty. No big adventures there. Well, it was a little tricky climbing back up to the road.
We decided to go on out 510 rather than go back the 8 miles where we turned off 550 and then 20 miles back to Marquette. The road did not hold up so well! Plus there were logging trucks with huge loads. We would pull over so not to slow them down, but then had to endure the dust. We were doing ok despite the bumps until we came to the part that had lots of gravel. Makes it more of a challenge, but TM is so good at this. Once we reached highway 41, we stopped to grab a bite to eat since it was 3:30 and we had not had anything since breakfast at 9. Then home to let poor TD out. He was fine and glad to see us.
Oh, the Big Bay Lighthouse? We will try another day.
God Bless

U.P. here

Looks like the truck may finally be fixed. Took 4 trips to the dealer, but it has now been a week and no "check engine" light. yipee. (makes TM easier to be around)
Haven't been super busy. Went to downtown Marquette to look around. We haven't actually been to the port yet, but we saw the Yacht Club (oh hum). The downtown is doing ok, not many closed shops at all. We ate at Donekers and the food was really good - and plentiful. They are also a candy shop. The bear claws (turtles) are scrumptious, but the fudge leaves something to be desired. It isn't bad, just not southern fudge.
We went to the Independence day parade and it was fun. Started out with people handing out little flags to wave, then there was all the candy that was thrown to the kids. They had some nice floats. Only one band, Marquette Senior High School, but there was the football team and the soccer team and the volleyball team. Nice weather for it too.
We took a ride up to Copper Harbor, MI and Fort Wilkins State Park. TD got to go this time and he enjoyed it. Had a bunch of kiddos surround him and pet, pet, pet. He is such a good boy. Anyway the area is beautiful. It is about a 3 hr. drive from here and the terrain is so different. We then came back by Eagle Harbor and the lighthouse museum there. Really fascinating and they have an old light with Frennell lenses. Also there is a "new" 1927 Chrysler there. Seems in 1926 a ship carrying 220 of these cars foundered at the harbor and was going down. They were able to save all the cars and kept one in Eagle Harbor. The rest were driven back to Detroit and refurbished and sold once again as new. Anybody willing to drive one was paid $5.00. Not $5.00 per day - $5.00 for the job. Lot of money in those days.
We had no cell service in Copper Harbor, but Eagle Harbor was fine.
All for now. God Bless
