Memorial Day

Monday, we pretty much goofed off in the morning. We went and did some grocery shopping around noon. Around 2p, we left for Woodstock, VA., to see our friends, Lance and Norma. They also happen to be Apryl's inlaws.
It was a breathtakingly beautiful day, so the drive was delightful. We also had no trouble finding their house. We arrived a little early, but they didn't seem to mind. We parked in a shady spot and left Traveling Dog next to the truck with some water.
We spent some time just visiting and looking at their great treetop view. Then Lance fired up the barbeque and fixed some good burgers and dogs. At dinner, I asked him about when his dad came to the US. What an interesting story that is. His dad came over from Germany after WWI.
Anyway, after the delicious meal (these folks can really put on a wonderful spread), we all piled into the cars to take the back road back to our campground. I rode with Lance and Norma and got a lot of info about the area. Just as we arrived at Camp Roosevelt - the first CCC camp - it really started to rain, so we did not get out of the cars. Would like to go back there sometime, as it looked really interesting. As we arrived at the area overlooking Luray and the valley, it was still raining, so we didn't see that beautiful view - but we will take their word for it. Norma told of meeting a bear one morning just as she came out of the fog (on top of the mountain). Scared them both pretty bad and the bear took off into the woods. No, she did not hit it.
Back at the campground, we gave them the long tour of the trailer. They were impressed and really liked it. They are thinking of renting one for a summer and traveling and are now more convinced that they would like it.
Tuesday we pretty much chilled. Mrs. C. and I walked down to the office to exchange some paperback books. Other than a few loads of laundry, that was pretty much it.
Wednesday we made our way to Gettysburg.

Luray

Well I have been lazy, er, busy and not being good about posting.
Our trip to Luray was without incident. We had one slow-down where there had been a wreck on the interstate, but didn't last long. The Country Waye is a lovely campground-the lawns are kept manicured and the sites are not too close together. We are in the Shenendoah valley, so everywhere we look there are mountains.
Friday, we drove to Stephens City, VA to go to Walgreens (who knew the only one would be an hour away). We came back via Skyline Drive. It was a beautiful clear day and the views were wonderful. It was a leisurely drive and we made several stops. Yes, TM took many pictures.
On Saturday the campground was full and there were plenty of children around. It was such a beautiful holiday weekend. We drove over to Shenendoah, VA, where our friends, Dee and Gene, were showing their 1969 Camaro. We spent a couple of hours with them enjoying conversation and looking at all the cars. TD was so nervous that he just laid down and put his head on Gene's foot and went to sleep. We managed to get out of town just before the parade started; if we hadn't we would have been stuck since the town closes for the parade.
Sunday we went to a very nice little congregation here in Luray. There were about 25 people. The teacher/preacher was quite good, he backed everything up with scripture but didn't "proof text". The song leader was good also.
That afternoon we went to Culpeper to see our latest grand-niece, Kiersten. Oh, and her parents and grandparents. Mrs. C. spent the afternoon holding the baby (I do think she took time to eat) TD got really excited at first with so many people, so we had to take him to the truck to calm down. Later, he was happy to be back among people and behaved himself. He did seem to wonder what Grandmother was holding in her lap. The dogs next door just barked and barked, but TD turned a deaf ear, he prefers people. It was a beautiful afternoon and a nice barbeque. We all came home tired and happy.
God Bless

New River

We are camped outside of Radford, VA overlooking the New River. TM will send a photo, but our back windows look right at the New River. It is a beautiful spot. When we first saw the campground, it looked a little small, but TM had no trouble backing this beauty right into the slot. When we saw the concrete pads we expected them to be level. Stupid us. But it is level and steady now.
I think Traveling Dog is glad to be home. He had great fun with Cleo and Maya, but this is his place. He likes having grandmother with us also. He was a little confused when he got in the back seat and found he was sharing it, but he figured out real quick that he could lay his head on grandmother's lap.
The trip here was uneventful. At least I guess it was since I slept most of it.
I had intended to post the itenerary, but it is on the other computer.
We are here at Sportsman's Campground until 5/22; then to Luray, VA til 5/28.

God Bless,

Trippin 2

Ok, the five of us - me, TM, Apryl, Gayle, & Mrs. C. - head over toward Rogersville. Now my cousin lives on Heck Hollow Rd. He has 35 acres there. Maybe you have an idea of him being out in the country. His land goes upward from the road, a medium long driveway. They have had lots of rain, so it is all red mud with lots of ruts. What we didn't know is they had just put in a culvert part way up on Saturday.
So we get there and decide where to go to lunch (some of us are hungry! ) Monte shows TM where he can turn the vehicle and not have to back all the way down the drive. Since TM is so used to backing (remember he does a great job with the trailer), he doesn't worry about it and says he can back just fine. Doing fine for a few yards and then KA-WHOMP! We stopped suddenly. it was a big hole where the culvert ended. TM put the car in forward gear, but it wouldn't go forward. I took a look and let him know that the left rear wheel was deep in a hole, no way was he getting out without help. Monte hooked the front of his truck to the car and started backing. No luck, the suburban was staying right there. Then he hitched it to the back, no go. Then he got the 4-wheeler, same story, third chapter. Nothing left but to call in the big guns - wrecker time.
Not knowing how long it would take the wrecker to arrive and not being able to get any other vehicle out of the drive - did I forget to say the suburban was completely blocking the drive?
We went raiding Joan's kitchen. She was prepared and we all had a filling meal.
The wrecker did show up in about 30 minutes and yanked that suburban right out of it's nest.
After a delightful visit, we made it back to Knoxville with no further excitement.
God Bless.

Trippin

On Friday, 5/9, we went with Doug and Glo up to Huntsville, TN to ride a train. Doug had called and made reservations for us. When we got there, just one good ole boy (Scott Co. has lots of them) was there. Seems the train was not running after all. There had been some problems with the engine. We were told to come back some time and ride for 1/2 price. We did get to get on the train and have a little "self-guided tour". It is in pretty rough shape. TM took a walk down the tracks to see what was around the bend (more track). After that tour, we went to Cove Lake State Park and toured the campground - very nice. We went looking for the Tennessee Battleship Museum. We found it on the high school grounds along with the Scott Co. Museum. Both extremely interesting. The Tennessee was next to the Arizona at Pearl Harbor and took some damage. They got repaired and were crusing within a week. The owners of the museum are passionate about what they do and were very informative.
On Monday, 5/12, five of us loaded into the suburban and traved to Greeneville and Rogersville. Here is Apryl's take on that trip:
After a fabulous visit with Jack & Sarah, we drive to Greeneville Machine & Iron Works to see Willis, Barbara, and Lisa. As we pull into the minuscule parking lot, TM says, "Be sure Cleo is on a leash because their cat does not like dogs." Apryl obediently clips the leash to Cleo's collar and allows her to jump out of the Suburban. BAM! Cleo is attacked by Garfield the cat who does not like dogs. Cleo is shocked and Apryl is stupefied! Pulling Cleo to her, she attempts to pick up the puppy when BAM! Garfield leaps onto Cleo's back. Cleo shakes her off, looks around wondering what is happening, Apryl stomps at the cat, and TM yells, "I told you she didn't like dogs." Pardon me, but I expect a cat that doesn't like dogs to hiss at them and then run...not ATTACK! Apparently, TM thought we all interpreted his warning as "this cat wants to kill all dogs." Luckily, no one was hurt and Lisa assured us that it wasn't personal, Garfield attacks ALL dogs...she even tries to claw at them thru closed windows. Perhaps TM will alter his description of Garfield. Believe it or not, Cleo still wants to be the first one out of the car!
After the drama, we had a pleasant visit
and then journeyed to Rogersville and more excitement...

More later. God Bless

Just in case

there is anyone left checking this blog --
It has been a busy 3 weeks, but somehow I just didn't think too many of you would be interested in all our doctor appointments.
Traveling Man did get to the dentist to get his cap started. He had to go to Greeneville for the 2nd appt. so that they could get everything done in our time frame. Kind of nice then to have the dentist take us to lunch. (maybe he wanted to be sure Don ate soft foods). No, really, he is a member at Laurel and he finished up with TM at lunch time.
It was also a good opportunity to go see relatives and we had a nice visit. We also checked out a county campground, but it seems to be full of permanent residents. While on the back road, we came across a marker for Greeneville College. It was started in 1794 and eventually was moved and became part of Tusculum. Who knew? TM did get some photos.
It was great to lunch with Brenda and Nita again. And I did manage to get in a few hours of volunteering at the hospital. I also got to attend the annual volunteer dinner, where it was good to see old friends.
We had a chance to lunch with Liz and Tim and Al and Joann. Just like old times - except Joann didn't make me pick the place! Liz had already done that.
Traveling dog has had a good time being with Cleo and Maya. They all get along great. He slept in our room a couple of nights, but since then he has been sleeping in the master bedroom. He took over one of Cleo's beds that is really too small for him, but he doesn't seem to care. Cleo just sleeps up on the bed with her people.
A and J went to Key West for a few days and had a great time. Cleo sure did miss them, but she ate regular - no pineing away for that gal.
Being back at Laurel has been so grand. Our friends, Ken and April, had us over to dinner one night and it was so delightful. It has been good seeing so many friends again. Some have kept up with us via this blog.
Just one more week here and then we head for VA. TM's mother is going with us.
We are just praying that TN RV gets done with the camper. They fixed one thing and broke another. The hydralics on the bedroom slide now has a leak, so they are trying to get the part to fix it. Also we ordered a futon to take the place of the sleeper sofa (that no one in their right mind would sleep on anyway). We are supposed to have it Mon., 12th. We know we can get in the camper and are trying to figure how we will get the sofa out - might have to hack it to pieces.
God Bless
