On the road again

Sat. 5/19 We are on the road to Savannah GA. We were there once before and loved it, but there was so much we did not see. It was a nice day traveling along the back roads. We saw this neat little memorial along the side of the road and had to stop and see. The man and his grandson has built this "garden" with a giant toadstool (big enough for Don to stand under) with frog, a small lighthouse, anchor and rowboat. We are still not sure why he built it, but it sure is neat.

We stopped at Hampton Plantation. I know, we never heard of it either. It is an interesting place, built before the Civil War and last resided in in the 1950's. A man by the name of Archibald Rutledge was the last resident who gave the estate to the state of S.C. The state has the property and outside of the house fully restored. The inside, however, is a work in progress. Very interesting to see the partial skeleton of the house. The ballroom is mostly restored. The downstairs rooms not quite as much and the upstairs hardly at all. They have lots of signs up describing how layers of paint came off to find the original colors - which are white and blue. There were some diaries left and the lady of the house used those colors because she had a recipe for white paint and she could add some of the indigo that they grew for market to get the blue color. It is a beautiful rich blue. The kitchen is still in a separate building. However, we were not allowed in that building. There are some bats that have nested (do bats nest?) in there and since they are an endangered species, nobody is allowed to disturb the building. Pretty fascinating place. There is an island in the middle of the river where rice was grown. It has now been allowed to go "back to nature" and you really don't want to go there since there are wild boar, gators and (yuck) snakes. I hate to use the "s" word, it makes me queasy!

We got to Savannah (actually Pooler GA) about 7pm. We looked up a church and plotted our route. Got up Sunday and headed out for services. Followed the directions exactly and no church building! Not only that, no buildings at all. Woods all over, no signs or anything. Oh well, it was too late to find another, so we went back to the motel and changed clothes ready to do some walking. I just want you to know that Don was the one who's thighs were screaming this time! He did a lot of kneeling to get pictures of the cars in Ocean City and, boy, did it tell on him. He got lots of sympathy from me -- not!
more later. God Bless

Hampton Plantation *sounds* neat...how did you find out about it? Where are the photos?
