On to the U.P.

crossing the Mackinac Bridge was fabulous. The bridge is almost 5 miles long and the scenery is something. We stopped in an overlook once we were across and got pictures of the bridge and fed the seagulls. It was a beautiful day.

When we were ready to eat, we stopped at a place that advertised "Pasties", but thought they would have other entrees. Nope, only 3 kinds of pasties. That is pronounced "pass-tees". It is meat and veggies in a folded pastry crust; also veggie pastie, or breadfast pastie. It seems they are a specialty of the Michigan Upper Peninsula. It tasted ok, but pretty bland.

We camped at Indian Lake State Park and it was beautiful! We got a great spot backed up right to the lake. We could sit and watch the lake and birds out the back window (glad we have lots of windows). It was really nice with large campsites.

We were only 4 miles from Palms Book State Park, home of the Big Spring. What an interesting place. The spring is 45 feet deep and is actually a number of small springs making up the volume. There is a self-guided "raft" that goes across the widest part of the spring with a large opening so you can look down to see the bottom and all the springs bubbling up. It was pretty amazing, kind of like pics I have seen of volcanic landscapes.

Some people camping across from us were enamored of Traveling Dog. Seems they had had one that looked almost exactly like him. They came over to get a pic of him. A lady named Donna and her 2 granddaughters, Brianna and Ashley. We had a nice talk. The next day, Brianna and Ashley took TD for 2 walks. When we left the park on Wed., they nearly cried as they said good-by to him.
