We decided that we needed to get to Knoxville since TM's mom was in the hospital. I hated to call Memphis and let them know we were not coming, but they understood (of course). Also sad to be missing our time in Diana.
Thursday morning we left Litchfield, IL headed for Paducah, Ky as our overnight stop. Had a good trip - until we pulled into the campground. Got out of the truck and looked at the trailer and one of the wheels was sitting wonky. TM immediately took a look (duh) and found the bearings had broken. As we parked the trailer, the people in the office called a repair company for us. They got the wheel off and realized that it just could not be fixed on-site. We spent the evening gathering up clothes and emptying the refrigerator preparing to move out. Friday morning TM moved the trailer as I sat at the park with boxes and coolers around me. When we got back, we rapidly stuck everything in the truck and headed for breakfast. TM was on the motor scooter and I driving the truck.
Everything went fine for about 80 miles. Then the scooter got tired and just quit running. Actually, it sputtered for a bit before quitting. We had to leave it on the side of I-24 near Clarksville, TN. Called the state police who told us that the scooter should be fine in daylight, but after dark was anybody's guess. We came to Knox, borrowed a trailer from our son-in-love, Jeremy, and drove back to the scooter. We got there around 11pm and the scooter was still there. Fun loading that thing in the dark, but we got it done. We were wise enough to spend the night in Clarksville. Had enough on-the-road time for the day.
We got a call about mid afternoon to let us know the trailer needs a new axle. TM had expected this, so was not a surprise. We have not gotten an estimate of cost yet - guess that will be the surprise - eekk!
Saturday morning we had continental breakfast at the hotel and started back. We decided we needed to stop for lunch at Cumberland Mountain State Park in Crossville. CMSP is one of our favorite places to go. Managed to get there just ahead of the crowd and had a wonderful (ate too much) lunch. Got to Knoxville after a, thankfully, uneventful trip.
TM's mom is at home now, but not doing great. The decision has been made that she can no longer live alone. I have been investigating assisted living, but looks like she will be moving in with her daughter. Hoping that works out.
So that is our story for now.
