On Sunday, TM and I went to services at the Gettysburg Church of Christ. They were having what they described as a "Bible Forum". The regular preacher's father was giving the lessons.
He did a good job - he knew his history and his Bible and had a nice, well-modulated voice.
The Bible class focused on the book of Ezekiel and the sermon mostly on Revelation. They invited us to the church potluck, but we needed to get back and check on Momma Traveler (thanks, Lisa, for the blog name for her).
We fixed a good lunch and then took a drive thru the battlefield. We quickly found the Tennessee monument. TM is quite knowledgeable on the battle and where the lines were, etc. so being with him was a good tour. (How does he remember all that stuff?).
Monday, TM and I went to Lancaster, PA and toured the Amish Farmhouse and working farm. The farmhouse was build in the 1700's by a Quaker family. It was later owned by Mennonites and then by an Amish family. In the mid 20th century is when it opened to the public. The guide told us the difference in Mennonite and Amish before we actually started the tour. Then during the tour she showed us all the different dresses and aprons that the Amish women use, when they change from one to the other, etc. Only men and children are allowed buttons, they are too ornamental for the women. About age 13 the girls begin using straight pins to hold their aprons on (ouch). In the last few years, more of them have been wearing aprons that tie so that they don't have to bother with the pins - that is true liberation.
We strolled around the farm and admired the baby goats and the horses, etc.
The ladies at the gift shop recommended a good local restaurant. We were pretty hungry since it was 3pm. We found Diener's and ate too much. Oh, but the noodles were good.
On the way back, we stopped at York to pick up prescriptions. TM was nice enough to let me run into AC Moore to pick up some beading stuff. By then it was 5:30 and traffic was awfully slow. We did not realize how big a town York is. WE went thru many small towns, one of those was Paradise. So, now we have been to Paradise.
Tuesday was laundry day and get ready to leave Gettysburg. Wednesday morning we headed out under cloudy skies for Scotrun, PA.

So am I to understand that at age 13 you become enough of a woman for buttons to be too ornamental or do girls just not wear aprons until that age? Interesting...
